We won't deny it: moving costs a lot of energy. We know a few tricks for packing moving boxes that can save you a lot of time and nerves. By the way, you can find more tips on relocating in our checklist for your move.
Tip #1 Get moving boxes in advance
The right material is crucial. Get enough moving boxes and reusable boxes. You can get boxes for books, clothes, etc. from a moving professional or DIY store. Maybe you know someone in your network who has recently moved and would be happy to lend you the boxes or sell them on favourable terms? Important: you will need boxes in different sizes. You will also need 4-5cm wide tape and padding, tissue paper or newspaper. And then you need self-adhesive labels and a pen for labelling the moving boxes.
Tip #2 Clear out junk early
It's easier to move with "light luggage". Think carefully about what you will need in your new home. The sooner you start selling superfluous belongings on Ricardo, Tutti.ch & Co., give them away to friends or take them to the recycling centre, the easier it will be to pack your moving boxes.
Tip #3 Start packing early enough
The first boxes should be packed a week before the official moving date. Otherwise stress is inevitable. Also remember that removal helpers - whether professionals or friends - will want to start moving on time on moving day. It probably won't be appreciated if they have to watch you packing the boxes first.
It's only logical to start packing the things you don't need regularly: books and albums, clothes for the next season, etc. A tip: start with the basement. There are usually a lot of things there that you don't need on a daily basis.
Tip #4 Pack moving boxes systematically
Only pack items together in a moving box that also belong in the same place in the new flat. This will save you time later on when you have to distribute your belongings to the right rooms.
Heavy things belong at the bottom of the box, light things at the top. Only put as many items in a box as you can still carry. Be careful not to tape the handle holes when closing the boxes.
Tip #5 Pack books properly
It's best to pack books and other heavy items in small boxes to avoid herniated discs. To protect the books, pack them back to back. This prevents them from sliding into each other and getting dog-eared.
Tip #6 Pack dishes in a shatterproof way
Shards bring luck, but not on moving day! Wrapping all glass pieces in paper helps to avoid shards. Removal professionals offer crockery boxes with inserts in which each drinking glass can be packed individually. Padding the bottom of the box and its walls provides double security for the precious pieces, while crumpled wrapping paper fills the voids between the dishes. Remember to label moving boxes with fragile contents accordingly.
Tip #7 Label moving boxes.
Label the boxes so that your removal men can put them in the right room straight away. Do you want to use the boxes several times or pass them on? Then use self-adhesive labels or masking tape for labelling. These can be removed easily after the removal.
Tip #8 Packing mirrors, pictures and televisions
To ensure that your favourite art and baroque mirror arrive intact in your new home, wrap mirrors and pictures in bubble wrap and tape them tightly. Caution: Newspaper is only suitable as a packing material to a limited extent, as the printing ink of the lettering will rub off under increased pressure or humidity.
Ideally, electrical appliances should be transported in their original carton. If you have not kept the original box, use a box of a similar size. Pack the television and other electrical appliances in bubble wrap.
Also be very careful during transport! Fragile items should be stored in the removal van in such a way that they cannot move during the journey.
Tip #9 Don't lose small parts
To avoid losing your keys and furniture screws, it is best to pack them in small plastic bags and stick them directly to the piece of furniture.
Tip #10 Store or temporarily store moving boxes
Do you have things that you don't want to move into your new home right away? Then you can rent a storage room in your vicinity. In your private storage room you can easily store furniture or moving boxes and you will have 24/7 access to your belongings.
Now we wish you good luck with packing and moving! If you have any questions about the temporary storage of furniture and other items, we will be happy to answer them personally at email@example.com or on 044 273 91 91.
